Ocular traumas are the principal cause for patients wearing an ocular prosthesis.

Ocular traumas at work are much less frequent than before due to the obligatory protective measures enforced in factories, laboratories etc. Traumas as a result of children’s games are also much less common because of the safety norms for toys. Despite these regulations there are still far too many cases of people losing their sight, and, sometimes, also their eye. The most frequent causes are road accidents, fireworks exploding, accidental falls in the case of elderly people etc.

In the case of trauma, the eye can become atrophic, or it may be necessary to resort to enucleation or evisceration. An excellent aesthetic result can be achieved by fitting customised prostheses on the atrophic eye or socket undergoing surgery.
