what the aesthetic result depends upon

Children

In the case of congenital ocular malformations (microphthalmia/anophthalmia) the precocity of the treatment together with the use of prostheses which permit a correct opening and closing of the eyelids from the first fitting are of the greatest importance in order to achieve a perfect aesthetic result.

It is vital to avoid the use of conformers or prostheses which, sticking out of the socket, do not consent the free movement and closing of the eyelids, keeping them open all the time.

In order to obtain a harmonic development of the bone socket and of the eyelids it is essential that the substitution of the prosthesis occurs with a frequency which is decided upon and personalised for every individual child. In the case of children who have undergone enucleation because of a tumour the presence of an implant which permits free movement of the prosthesis is the key to aesthetic success.

In the case of traumas or diseases in which the child has an atrophic eye the fitting of a shell prosthesis permits the best outcome, both aesthetically and also in terms of prosthetic movement, without any surgery.

It is possible, when necessary, to resort to surgical reconstruction of the socket (insertion of an implant), of the eyelids and of the bone to achieve the best aesthetic outcome.

WHAT THE AESTHETIC RESULT DEPENDS UPON

Adults

The aesthetic result is conditioned by several different factors. In the case of trauma when it has been possible not to remove the eye, even though it is atrophic, the fitting of a moulded shell prosthesis, permits the attainment of the best possible outcome aesthetically and also in terms of tolerance and motility.

When it has not been possible to save the eye, and the patient has undergone a demolitive operation (enucleation/evisceration), the presence of an implant in the socket consents free movement of the prosthesis and an excellent aesthetic result. With traumas, a correct repair of the orbital bone and eyelid tissues is essential, together with the fitting of the prosthesis, for a good aesthetic result.

With patients who have undergone enucleation because of a tumour, when there is no implant in the socket, our moulded prostheses regardless of the type of surgery, permit the best possible outcome both aesthetically and in terms of motility.

The presence of an atrophic eye is an element which favours a good aesthetic result.
